POSITION TITLE: MANAGER - LABORATORY
POSITION SUMMARY:
·Supervises the operation of the test laboratory using sound engineering principles
to obtain accurate and meaningful results.
·Activities in the laboratory include testing and analyzing prototype, competitive,
new, existing, and defective products. Participates in the design and development
of new products and recommends action necessary to improve cost effectiveness
and/or correct deficiencies of existing products.
·Optimizes the organization’s abilities to introduce new media, standardize
existing grades in an expeditious manner, and maintain current performance data.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Associate’s degree in chemistry, physical sciences, or engineering. Any deviations from the above requirements (e.g. substituting more work experience for required education) will be evaluated and approved by the Vice President - Engineering.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in chemistry, physical sciences, or engineering with experience in the design, development and/or testing of filtration products, special courses in industrial management and other applied engineering services desirable.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers and applicable software. Experience with basic equipment such as scales, microscopes, etc.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: All divisional departments.
External: Customers and suppliers.
SUPERVISES:
Laboratory personnel.
SUPERVISED BY: Vice President Engineering.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for scheduling and planning laboratory activity to assure timely
responses on a priority basis and to fully utilize equipment and manpower. 2. Performs design studies of potential new products and carries through with the
fabrication of prototypes and laboratory performance evaluations using laboratory
equipment. 3. Initiates evaluations of design changes to correct product performance
deficiencies as well as evaluations of materials for improved cost effectiveness. 4. Organizes and is responsible for laboratory operating procedures, records, files,
and technical references. 5. Stays current on developments in filtration materials, designs and test
procedures through contact with professional societies, educational institutions
and review of technical papers, textbooks,periodicals, etc. 6. Conducts training sessions to keep departmental personnel informed of procedures,
methods, use of equipment, and testing techniques. 7. Works with immediate supervisor in evaluating and obtaining new equipment for the
laboratory. 8. Prepares and submits operating budget and controls department to operate within
approved budget. 9. Is responsible for maximum efficiency and productivity of laboratory personnel.
This is accomplished through proper selection, training, and development of
subordinate personnel. 10. Is responsible for the proper application of established department employee
relations, policies, wage and salary adjustments, administration policies, and
safety and health regulations. 11. Maintains a spreadsheet on all media grades in the system, plus experimental
grades being pursued. 12. Maintains graphs of beta ratio versus micron size for all media grades. Also
maintains data on capacity per square inch and efficiency at various velocity
rates for media grades. 13. Interacts with media vendors to keep abreast of new developments in media
materials.
14. Works with engineering department during the development of new media grades,
assisting on quality issues with cure, mechanical strength, capacity, efficiency,
and other media performance. 15. Reviews media grade inventory periodically to determine where we can eliminate
and standardize paper grades. 16. Is involved in the release of new paper grades and keeps records on our
specifications in order to provide input and guidance on projects. 17. Is responsible for quality and safety of own work and compliance of all company
procedures and policies. |
